The Opening Ceremony of the “Chinese Seal” Rock Inscription of Beijing 2008 Logo
Approved by Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee and constructed by the Chinese Culture Link Project Organization Committee together with the people's government of Miyun County in Beijing, the large-scale rock inscription on a cliff surface of the “Chinese Seal”, depicting the Beijing 2008 logo, was completed on July 13 on Yunmeng Mountain in Miyun County. The performance of “Inspirse China, enjoy the Olympics” was opened.

In October 2006 the Chinese Culture Link Project Organization Committee proposed to Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee to engrave the symbol of the Beijing Olympic Games, the “Chinese Seal” on a cliff face in China. This idea was appreciated and supported by BOCOG President Liu Qi and the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee. The Chinese Culture Link Project Organization Committee considered more than ten scenic areas and selected the best location. They finally decided on Miyun County in Beijing, on the peak of Yunlong gorge on Yunmeng mountain.
In April 2007 the Beijing Geological Engineering Design Research Institute agreed on the peak of Yunlong gorge as the best place to construct the “Chinese Seal” rock inscription. In July 2007, after approval from the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, Beijing Miyun county party committee and the people’s government took on responsibility for construction of this significant project. Miyun County formed an engineering project construction leading group which is responsible for the construction and the coordination of the “Chinese Seal” rock inscription.
The “Chinese Seal” rock inscription project began in August 2007 and will finish in July 2008. The project comprised a loop path, car park, Chinese calligraphy of “Jing” Square, scenic viewing point and the “Chinese Seal” rock inscription project. The “Chinese Seal” rock inscription is 96 meters tall and 38 meters wide, inscribed at a height of 968 meters, on the peak of Yunlong gorge, Yunmeng mountain. The emblem itself is 76 meters in height and 38 meters wide; the calligraphy “Jing” is 50cm deep and 8 meters wide; the inscribed text rock inscription is 8 meters high and 16.8 meters wide; the rock inscription platform is 20 meters wide and 40 meters long. The construction work lasted about 11 months, including the planting of trees covering 30,000 square meters and the involvement of more than 500 people. The “Chinese Seal” rock inscription will become a new landmark in Beijing.
On the ceremony, Miyun County party committee secretary Xia qiang delivered a speech and he said: “Miyun is a recognized ecology area of Beijing, and an important water source for the capital. For many years the people of Miyun have diligently protected the capital’s water source and constructed ecological barriers. Since the successful bid for the Olympic Games, the Miyun people have continued constantly with ecological developments. In March 2005, the Miyun county party committee and the County government proposed the objective of building a national ecological county. In April 2008 they achieved the goal, which was approved by the national environmental protection department. The “Chinese Seal” rock inscription is a symbol of the perfect combination of the broad and profound Chinese culture and the international Olympic spirit. It gives a new dimension to Miyun ecological county and encourages the popularization of Olympic culture and spirit.
Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee executive vice-president Jiang xiaoyu said in his speech, “in the 7th anniversary of the successful bid of Beijing Olympic Games, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games the “Chinese Seal” rock inscription was completed in Miyun. On behalf of Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, I express the warmest congratulation to this project and thank to the leaders and the public who care about and support Beijing Olympic Games. The National People’s Congress Vice Committee Chief Sang Guowei said: “2008 Olympic Games is condensing the entire Chinese earnest hope to Olympic Games. We will greet the guest all over the world with warmly service and we believe under the leading of Central Party Committee, 2008 Beijing Olympic Games certainly will obtain the complete success.”
Finally, the National People’s Congress Vice Committee Chief Sang Guowei and Beijing Municipal party committee member Niu Youcheng unveiled the “Chinese Seal” rock inscription. Nearly 500 actors participated in the celebration performance; 80 media reporters entered for the report.
